As the largest city in Delaware, Wilmington blends modern lifestyles with history and classic architecture. Rich in charm, the colonial home embraces historic elements that the homeowners love, but they knew it was time to replace the 100-year-old double-hung windows. The windows were drafty, worn out and hard to maintain. To top it all off, the existing windows were starting to become an eyesore that ultimately diminished curb appeal. The homeowners turned to our team to replace their colonial windows and patio door with new products that would honor the historical beauty of their house.

Colonial Windows and Doors Complement Home Style

This home hits all the defining characteristics of colonial-style architecture. The traditional design typically features a rectangular-shaped home with a gabled roof and flat exterior walls. A neutral color scheme, symmetrical windows and a centered front door complete the colonial aesthetic. For these homeowners, preserving this historic look, while improving the performance of their windows and doors, was of the utmost importance.

Colonial windows are crafted with traditional grilles with symmetrical lines, giving the appearance of individual windowpanes. Choosing white windows and white patio doors helped to maintain the original color combinations across the home.

Wood Windows Protect Against Wilmington Elements

Matching the original windows and doors, the homeowners decided on wood products for their replacement project. Wood windows and wood patio doors offer natural beauty and warmth, while delivering excellent energy efficiency. With all openings now tightly sealed, the homeowners don’t experience leaks and drafts anymore. Low-maintenance aluminum cladding on the exterior of their windows and doors helps protect the wood from the elements, resisting rot and corrosion for years to come. These features are key with heavier rainfalls and warmer summers experienced in Wilmington. The white cladding affords the home with a crisp and fresh look that greatly enhances curb appeal.

Window and Door Replacement Preserves Historic Authenticity

Pella Reserve – Traditional windows and patio doors were the perfect solution for maintaining the historical qualities of this home. The homeowners wanted their replacement windows and doors to match in appearance, without disturbing the existing trim and exterior shutters. Reserve products feature thoughtfully designed craftsmanship, such as finely detailed sashes and grille profiles, that deliver timeless authenticity.

Some of the window openings in this home are very wide and require a commercial grade product. Custom-crafted wood windows were built to fit the size and still match the smaller windows throughout the house. The home also has a complex sunroom configuration on the side. Casement windows, special shape windows and a hinged patio door were made-to-order, successfully duplicating the original design of the space. The incredible number of possibilities within this product line helped us meet the unique requirements of this historic home project.
