3 Simple Steps for Measuring Your Windows
When it comes to measuring your windows for replacement, the three most important things to remember are to measure the width of the product, the product height and then to write both of those measurements down. Certain products need to be measured differently, so product-specific measuring instructions are below. Follow these instructions to get the most accurate dimensions.
Measuring Awning or Casement Windows
- Measure the width of your awning or casement window at the center. Extend your tape measure horizontally from trim to trim.
- Measure the height of your casement or awning window. Extend your tape measure vertically from trim to trim.
- Double check all measurements and make sure to capture both the width and height measurements of your casement or awning window.
Measuring Sliding, Double-Hung or Single-Hung Windows
- Measure the width of your single- or double-hung window from trim to trim in the middle. On a sliding window, measure from trim to trim at the center.
- Measure the height of your double- or single-hung window. On a sliding window, measure the height in the middle. Extend your tape measure vertically from trim to trim.
- Double check all measurements and make sure to capture both the width and height measurements of your sliding, single- or double-hung window.
Measuring Bay or Bow Windows
- Measure the width of each window panel in the bay or bow window at the center. Make sure to note the width of the center window separately, as it may be different than the others. Extend your tape measure horizontally from jamb to jamb or trim to trim.
- Double check all measurements and make sure to capture both the width and height measurements of your bay and bow window.
- Measure the height of your bay or bow window at the center. Extend your tape measure vertically from trim to trim.
Having this information will provide a foundation as you start to look at the cost of various types of products and set your project budget. The necessary frame and window size may be slightly different than your measurement. But don't worry, a certified Pella professional will confirm measurements and conduct an installation inspection of your home before Pella starts to build your products.
