With a wide variety of architecture throughout its many neighborhoods, Austin, Texas is full of rich design history and culture. Mid-century modern homes are abundant both downtown and in the suburbs with many houses being built to emulate this style. We worked with the owners of a newer home, built in 2019, who wanted to replace 31 windows and 4 doors. They wanted high-quality and energy-efficient windows to combat the Austin heat. We knew Pella Reserve — Contemporary windows and patio doors would provide the solution they were looking for.

Contemporary Windows Complement Mid-Century Modern Style

The design of this home is truly a picture of mid-century modern architecture. Built on the founding principles of minimalism and a connection to nature, this kind of design pairs well with our contemporary windows and doors. We intentionally left grilles out to provide unobstructed views. Large windows bring the outdoors in, thanks to plenty of fresh air and natural light. The clean lines and symmetrical shapes of the windows and doors work well with the sharp angles of the roofline. As a common material in mid-century modern homes, wood helps connect the house to the outside and offers a beautiful, organic look and feel.

New Patio Doors Transform Backyard into Perfect Entertaining Space

These Austin locals know all about enjoying warm summer days and entertaining in their backyard. With the new doors, they wanted to ensure a cohesive and open transition from the living room to the patio. Our goal of this installation was to help the homeowners and their guests enjoy the outdoors. With floor-to-ceiling picture windows on the sides of the patio doors and clerestory windows above, we created a wall of glass that wraps around the corner of the home.

Wood Windows Offer Design Versatility and Combat Texas Heat

Wood is a desirable material as it offers ample design flexibility and is durable in hot climates. Fitted with Low-E SunDefense glass panes, the new windows and doors of this home offer better indoor temperature control and comfort for the homeowners. This kind of glass is especially important in Austin’s hot and sunny climate as the windows block 94% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Our Reserve — Contemporary wood products have many interior stains and exterior aluminum cladding options to choose from.

This was a huge project that offered immense upgrades to the home. Staying true to mid-century modern architecture, we installed windows and doors that look fantastic while making the space more comfortable for the homeowners.
