The homeowners of this 1969 Lawrence, KS home loved their sunroom for its natural light and peaceful view of the yard. But over the years, the original windows had become drafty and inefficient, making the space less comfortable in both summer and winter.
When they connected with Pella of Kansas, they had two main priorities: improve energy efficiency and preserve the clean, midcentury look of the space. The sunroom’s floor-to-ceiling windows were a defining part of the home’s style, so any replacement needed to feel true to the original design.
After reviewing their options with the Pella team, the homeowners landed on a solution that balanced performance and aesthetics – Lifestyle Series picture windows that blended in beautifully while delivering real improvements in comfort.
A Custom Solution to Match the Home’s Original Trim
One of the trickier parts of this project was getting the exterior trim just right. The sunroom had a distinctive midcentury yellow that gave the home its character, and the homeowners wanted to keep that look. To make it work, we custom-matched the color using Benjamin Moore’s Hawthorne Yellow so the new trim would blend in seamlessly with the existing siding.
Inside, they wanted the new windows to feel like they’d always been there. That meant matching the interior stain to their original wood shutters. We worked with a local finisher to custom stain the pine frames, which helped tie the whole room together and keep the warm, lived-in feel they loved.
Even the small details – like the AZEK brickmould and subsills – were chosen and painted to match the home’s palette. Nothing felt out of place, and the finished space looked like it had always been part of the original design.
Better Energy Efficiency Without Sacrificing Light
The sunroom’s large windows were one of the homeowners’ favorite features, but over time, they had become a major source of energy loss. On sunny days, the space would heat up quickly, and in the colder months, it was tough to keep warm.
Replacing the old windows with new ones featuring advanced Low-E insulating glass and argon gas made an immediate difference. The updated glass helps reduce heat transfer and block UV rays while still letting in plenty of natural light. Now, the sunroom stays comfortable no matter the season—bright and sunny without being too hot in summer or drafty in winter.
Consistency Across the Entire Home
This project wasn’t just about improving one space. It was part of a larger vision for the whole home. The homeowners had already begun updating other areas of the house with brown window exteriors and wanted the sunroom to match.
By using the same window color, this final update unified the appearance of the home from every side. Now, no matter where you look—from the front yard to the backyard—the windows reflect a single, thoughtful design choice that elevates the home’s overall curb appeal.
A Seamless Blend of Old and New
With this sunroom window replacement, the homeowners achieved exactly what they set out to do: increase their home’s energy efficiency while maintaining the timeless midcentury charm they’ve always loved.
This wasn’t just a functional improvement—it was a design-forward transformation that respected the home’s past and invested in its future. The newly installed windows not only look like they’ve always belonged, but they also perform in ways the originals never could.
From custom stains to carefully matched trim, every detail was handled with precision and care by the Pella Kansas team. The result is a sunroom that looks cohesive, feels comfortable and continues to be a space the homeowners enjoy every day.
