Falmouth, MA is known for its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters. Located on the Southwest corner of Cape Cod, this classic beach town is home to breathtaking waterfront views and historic homes. To honor and preserve that coastal charm, this remodel project began with a bold move: relocating the center of a 1930s Cape Cod–style home to this premier Falmouth location. The architect loved the red cedar and curved rakes— sloped sides on a gabled roof—featured on the original home and wanted to incorporate these Cape Cod style elements in the renovation.
To bring this to life, this picturesque home needed a full renovation with new windows and doors. Our team partnered with the architect to update the original windows and doors with new wood replacements. As the most customizable material, wood offers unparalleled historical detailing.
Authentic Window Grilles Add Character to Cape Cod Style Home
Old meets new in this Cape Cod style home makeover. The architect was looking to keep the classical home style by using red cedar shingles, a pitched roof and white windows. Our team suggested using Integral Light Technology (ILT) grilles to create the distinctive window grille patterns. These wood window grilles are permanently bonded to the interior and exterior of the window. They achieve the look of individual windowpanes and create the most authentic version of truly divided light, which is a key element in traditional style homes.
Traditional window grids use vertical and horizontal lines to create their recognizable pattern. Our team installed double-hung windows that feature a variety of grille patterns including traditional, top row and cross grille patterns. On the second floor, we added a dormer window with a sunburst grille pattern. This window acts as a decorative element, adding a vintage touch to enhance the historic charm of this Cape Cod home. A variety of grille patterns play into the classical style of this home, creating an eye-catching design statement that enhances curb appeal and adds lasting character.
Double-Hung Kitchen Windows Enhance Air Flow
In the remodeled kitchen, double-hung windows were selected to keep the cooking area well-ventilated. They are designed with functionality in mind. Both sashes can move independently of one another, allowing the new homeowners to open both window sashes at the same time. Warm air escapes out of the top while fresh ocean breezes enter through the bottom. These kitchen windows are perfect for maximizing air flow, keeping the homeowners comfortable throughout the changing Cape Cod seasons.
The over-the-sink window placement is perfect for capturing scenic views and sunshine. The three double-hung windows overlook the front yard creating an enjoyable view when the homeowners are cooking and washing dishes. This strategic window placement also adds an abundance of sunlight into the kitchen, brightening the entire space.
Wood Windows Withstand Extreme Coastal Weather Conditions in Falmouth
Pella Reserve — Traditional windows not only use historically accurate detailing but also are extremely durable. Our team recommended wood windows with a Seacoast EnduraClad® finish for maximum strength. This coastal home experiences high salt exposure on Cape Cod making a protective exterior finish very important. Pella’s wooden frames also use an advanced EnduraGuard® wood protection to resist the effects of moisture, decay and stains. Our team is confident these new windows will withstand the harsh Vineyard Sound winds and high tides.
This renovation project led to a gorgeous, updated Cape Cod-style home in Falmouth. The white wood windows perfectly complement the home’s traditional style. The double-hung windows also enhance air flow throughout the home and stay strong through the extreme weather experienced in Cape Cod. Overall, the architect is incredibly pleased with the window solutions that helped bring his vision to life.
