Project Details

In picturesque, coastal South County, Rhode Island, a historic waterfront home underwent an extensive renovation to preserve its Victorian-era character while improving energy efficiency and functionality. At Pella Windows and Doors of Southern New England, we had the privilege of working with the homeowners to select and install custom wood windows that harmonize with the home's unique architectural style.

Deterioration of Original Victorian Windows

This waterfront gem had endured decades of exposure to harsh ocean air and storms, leading to significant deterioration of the original wood windows. The single-pane glass and warped frames compromised the home's energy efficiency and functionality. The owners sought to replace the historic windows while maintaining the home's Victorian charm and architectural integrity.

Finding the Right Historic Replacement Windows

After careful consideration, the owners selected the Pella® Reserve™ — Traditional double-hung windows for their combination of energy efficiency and classic design elements. The double-hung style allows for both the upper and lower sashes to be operable, providing versatile ventilation options. Pella® Reserve™ products are designed to provide historically accurate details and aesthetics, meeting the stringent requirements for historic preservation projects. The traditional double-hung windows offer the perfect blend of modern performance and timeless charm, ensuring the home maintains its authentic character while benefiting from advanced window technology.

To capture the Victorian aesthetic, we collaborated with the homeowners to create a custom grille pattern featuring intricate dividing mullions arranged in a decorative grid. The design also incorporates charming circle windows, a distinguishing feature found in many Victorian-era homes. These round windows add architectural interest and whimsy, complementing the historic character of the property.

Preserving Architectural Heritage with Wood Windows

This historic renovation project in South County exemplifies the perfect blend of art, craftsmanship and meaningful client relationships. Wood, being the most flexible material when it comes to design and customization, and the most historically authentic choice, was the ideal material for this project. We are proud to have played a part in equipping this waterfront gem with custom wood windows that honor its Victorian-era provenance while providing modern performance and energy efficiency. As this home continues to witness the changing tides and passing years, its beautifully crafted wood windows will stand as a testament to the value of preserving architectural heritage and the enduring beauty of this natural material.
