Wood Windows Add Timeless Beauty to 1639 Cape Cod Home

Wood window innovations perfectly blend modern comfort with traditional style.

Project Details

When Stephenie and Chase Watts bought this 1639 Cape Cod home, they knew they were taking on a project that would blend historic charm with modern comfort. As passionate hosts who love preserving old spaces, their goal was to create a cozy, inviting retreat while staying true to the home’s rich past. The result— the House On The Cape.

One of the first things they tackled? The windows. As one of the oldest homes on the Cape, the couple’s top priority was keeping authenticity. They partnered with our expert team at Pella Southern New England to keep the charm of this historical home.

Retractable Window Screen Makes a Statement in Cape Cod Home

The homeowners wanted windows that combined beautiful design with modern features. That’s why we recommended double-hung windows with Pella’s exclusive Integrated Rolscreen. The Watts family loved this innovative screen—Stephenie especially appreciated how it magically appears when the window is opened and disappears when it’s closed. No more dealing with screens blocking the view or getting in the way of the home’s beautiful photos.

The InView™ fiberglass mesh allows more light and air to enter through the window. It provides a cleaner, more polished look to the sunroom’s double-hung windows. The couple loves Pella’s innovative design and can’t wait for their family and friends to experience the new windows firsthand.

“We looked at Pella because we wanted a company with heart and ingenuity. We needed a product that matched the aesthetics of our original windows but also offered utilitarian design features such as a retractable screen.”

Wood Windows Allow for Unlimited Customizations for Historic Sandwich Home

This 300-year-old home has truly stood the test of time. The Watts family is proud to be the owners of this Cape Cod home and were looking for windows that would complement its historic charm. We proposed using Pella® Reserve™ — Traditional wood windows for their unparalled historical detailing. These windows seamlessly blend into the home by matching the existing Cape Cod style with its unlimited customization options from paint and cladding color to hardware and grille profiles.

Our team suggested using Integral Light Technology grilles to stay true to the home’s history. This grille choice created the look of individual windowpanes which were used in the home’s existing windows. The ILT grilles are permanently bonded to the inside and outside of the glass appearing to the eye as all individual panes of glass. These distinctive grilles, with their clean lines and patterns, add sophisticated style to the home. We were pleased that this window customization kept the original look and feel of the 17th century windows, capturing the home’s historical charm.

A Key Component of Cape Cod Style: Double-Hung Windows

The top priority for the House on the Cape was to preserve its traditional style. Our expert team proposed double-hung windows to complement the Cape Cod design for three specific reasons.

  1. Historical accuracy: Double-hung windows were the main window type used in New England when Cape Cod style homes were built. These historic replacement windows preserve the traditional look and feel with their distinctive grille patterns and crisp lines.
  2. Symmetry and balance: The top and bottom window sashes are the same size, and they are evenly spaced out throughout the home to create symmetry on the exterior facade. Plus, the wooden frames, grilles and panes of glass have even proportions necessary for a well-balanced design.
  3. Simple design: To capture the simplicity of the Cape Cod style, these double-hung windows use minimal detailing, which complements other features: the gabled roof, dormer windows and shingle siding. The cream color windows match the home’s interior while creating a nice contrast to the exterior siding.

Stephenie and Chris Watts adore their new double-hung windows. They love how our team proposed a window solution that perfectly blended modern innovation with historical accuracy. Now, with the help from our team, the couple has created an oceanside oasis for visitors to transport themselves to the House On The Cape with endless nautical charm
