Project Details

On the industrial side of Greenfield, the Abercrombie Building, built in 1896 as a liquor warehouse, has been transformed into the new district attorney office. To complete these renovations, Thomas Douglas Architects partnered with Pella of Western Massachusetts to install new wood windows. Our team helped their vision come to life by keeping the existing grille patterns and styles in the new windows for the office building.

Clad Wood Windows Offer Long-Term Durability

Pella Reserve — Traditional double-hung windows are known for their architectural details and craftsmanship, making them the ideal choice for this project. With nearly 130 years of history in Greenfield, the Abercrombie Building has remained intact throughout America’s most monumental events. The clients prioritized maintaining the building’s historic integrity, while also ensuring long-lasting durability for the years to come.

To achieve longevity and preserve the original details, we recommended clad windows that feature an exterior layer of protection of extruded aluminum cladding. The wooden frames are covered with a low maintenance, watershed cladding known as EnduraClad®. This layer protects the wood from harsh conditions while resisting rot and corrosion over time. Meanwhile, our EnduraGuard® protection provides a shield against moisture and outside elements. The clients can rest assured that their selection will be resilient in the extreme weather of the Northeast.

Hartford Green Windows Preserves Character of Original Structure

In order to keep the historical detailing, our team installed Pella Reserve — Traditional double-hung windows. To maintain the original design, we suggested Hartford Green as an exterior finish, matching the former windows’ characteristics. With deep appreciation for the Abercrombie Building, our expert team, the architects and district attorney’s office all worked diligently to research, design and review historical details. Additionally, these aluminum–clad exteriors resist chalking and fading, optimizing both aesthetics and long-term functionality.

Strategically Placed Windows Enhance Natural Light Throughout Office Building

To meet the client's needs of additional natural daylight and outside views, our team carefully considered the new window placements. We chose to replace and add more windows while keeping the integrity of the original building. Through strategic window placements designed by the architects, we carried out their vision and enhanced the overall natural light and visibility, creating a light-filled working space. In all, our clients were overjoyed with the window selection and placement. The district attorney is excited to use their new office space and enjoy the abundance of natural light from their new double-hung windows.
